There’s something special about piling your kids into an RV and heading out onto the open road. One summer, when my daughters were around 7 and 11, we did just that. Like many good Minnesotans, we rented an RV and pointed it west — destination: Mount Rushmore. RV adventures with kids – is is the kind of trip every dad should try at least once. Just be ready for a few surprises along the way.
The Classic Route: Minnesota to Mount Rushmore
We drove across South Dakota — wide open highways, wall-to-wall billboards, and miles of family fun waiting to happen. Of course, we had to stop at the legendary Wall Drug. It’s kitschy, it’s chaotic, and it’s completely awesome. We grabbed ice cream, wandered through the endless shops, and loaded up on souvenirs — including a few cranked-out penny imprints (you know the kind, where you turn the handle and flatten a penny into a souvenir). RV adventure with kids is really pure gold.
Then we made it to Mount Rushmore, which was surprisingly well done. Yes, it was a little crowded, but still worth it. The visitor center was clean and impressive, and we all watched a short documentary on the making of the monument — unexpectedly inspiring. And yes, we walked away with more souvenirs than we probably needed, but that’s part of the fun.
The Unexpected: When the RV Says “Nope”
After a few days of smooth driving, the RV started acting up. No power. Sluggish. I struggled to climb hills. I hoped it would fix itself (classic dad move), but eventually I called the rental company. They directed us to a Ford dealer, where we learned the catalytic converter was clogged.
Good news: it was covered by warranty.
Better news: we had to stay in a hotel for the night — which turned out to be one of the best parts of the trip. The kids jumped on the beds, swam in the pool, and treated it like a five-star resort. We ordered pizza and laughed about our “RV breakdown adventure.”
It was a good reminder that sometimes the detour is the destination.
Why Every Dad Should Try an RV Trip
This trip wasn’t fancy. It wasn’t expensive. But it was unforgettable.
- The kids learned how to live and get along in a small space
- They saw a slice of America they won’t forget
- And they learned how to handle it when things don’t go according to plan
Most importantly, we got quality time — the kind that sticks with you.
At Fathers Eve, we’re always looking for ways to help dads connect, recharge, and celebrate fatherhood — especially with their kids. Whether it’s a big adventure like an RV trip or a backyard cookout, we love sharing ideas and resources that bring dads closer to the ones who matter most.
